"Organic food production is a heavily regulated industry, distinct from private gardening"

Hello to you all...

297200_056801413262206002@LindyMainRed Barn produces the VERY best really free range foods. We have never called our chicken or eggs organic and we resent those who do without any knowledge of what it means to get organic certification.

There are only 2 types of organic. Certified organic or Organic in conversion.

‘Certified organic’ means the farmers have undergone an official VERY costly process of application, inspection, compliance and authentication that entitles them to use the ORGANIC label or even the WORD Organic.

‘Organic in conversion’ means the farmers are still in the process of getting the organic certification, a process that takes about three years on average.

There are NO ORGANIC CHICKENS in South Africa and only ONE CERTIFIED organic egg producer! This is due to limitations with available organic feed sources and the costs involved.

So when you see that ORGANIC sign at the health shop, market, restaurant or supermarket, ASK, are you certified organic? Can I see your certificate?

Producing your own veggies to sell, growing chickens and collecting eggs in your garden or picking fruit from your tree does not mean you can sell them as "ORGANIC".

Perhaps one day Red Barn will be the first organically certified chicken in SA? We are as close as you can get....
